Illustrations

These projects are all illustrations that were made over the last couple years. Two of them were made in an Intro to Drawing class and the other was made outside of school as a personal project. All of these pieces have a juxtaposition of style to highlight different artistic styles.

Illustration #1

This was one of the Intro to Drawing class projects. This project was taking a still life object and turning it into a new concept. The still life object is a box fan. The piece is all done in pencil. The fan was meant to look as if it were in motion so the lines are wobbly and very soft. The illustrations coming out of the fan resemble inner thoughts. These are drawings of things that randomly pop into mind. The juxtaposition is a solid, geometric, structure next to a chaotic mess with no definite meaning.

Illustration #2

This was the final project of the Intro to Drawing class. This project started with sketching something that we wanted, which in this case was a sword, and then developed into getting inspiration from a related movie. This piece took inspiration from the director Akira Kurosawa. This drawing is a collage comprised of pencil graphite, charcoal, and spray paint. There are two scenes of two different movies that are portrayed. The movie Yojimbo (about a samurai) and the movie Dreams (about the end of the world). The figure is from a scene in Yojimbo and it is pasted onto an abstracted rendition of the final scene from Dreams. This piece juxtaposes two very different movies to exemplify the brilliance and variety of Akira Kurosawa.

Illustration #3

This project was a personal project. It was made out of sharpie and pencil graphite. This drawing was meant to juxtapose different drawing techniques. One of not looking while drawing portraiture, and the other by drawing a certain part of the face from a picture. These two drawing styles both create focus points on the detailed sections, guiding the eye around the page, and connect each other. The detailed drawings are meant to connect the line drawings to figural shapes and the line drawings are meant to bring the single parts of the face back to the face as a whole.
